{"id":9588,"date":"2025-12-21T22:37:33","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T22:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=9588"},"modified":"2025-12-21T22:37:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T22:37:33","slug":"required-ramadan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=9588","title":{"rendered":"What Is Required of You in Ramadan?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By: Sheikh <a href=\"en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_bin_Jamil_Zeno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muhammad ibn Jameel Zeenoo<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10596\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.the-faith.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/What-Is-Required-of-You-in-Ramadan.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10596\" class=\"wp-image-10596 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.the-faith.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/What-Is-Required-of-You-in-Ramadan-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"What Is Required of You in Ramadan?\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Know\u00a0 that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/almighty-allah\/between-love-of-allah-and-love-of-oneself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allah<\/a> has made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/acts-of-worship\/fasting\/15-hadiths-on-ramadan-and-fasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fasting<\/a> obligatory upon us so that we worship Him by doing so; (therefore) so that your fast is acceptable and beneficial (to you) be aware of the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>1)<\/strong> <strong>Be wary of protecting your prayers:<\/strong><\/span> Many people who are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/acts-of-worship\/fasting\/the-fourth-pillar-of-islam-fasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fasting<\/a> are slack in maintaining their prayers despite it being a pillar of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/islamic-religion-fruits-of-hajj-part-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">religion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>2)<\/strong> <strong>Maintain good manners:<\/strong> <\/span>Be wary of falling into ill manners towards the people, particularly whilst fasting. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/worship\/fasting-act-worship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fasting <\/a>purifies the inner self and does not lead to ill manners.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">3)<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Do not speak unnecessarily<\/span><\/strong> even if you are joking, as this will reduce the reward of your fast. Take note of what the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/the-last-prophet\/biography-of-the-prophet-muhammad-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)<\/a> said: \u201cIf any of you are fasting, then abstain from ignorant and indecent speech that day; and if anyone curses you or strikes you, then say: I am fasting.\u201d (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">4) Benefit from the fast by leaving off smoking<\/span><\/strong>, which causes cancer and ulcers; Try to maintain your willpower and leave off smoking in the evening just as you left it during the day. As a result, you will be better off in health as well as financially.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">5)<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Be wary of divulging in excessive eating<\/span><\/strong> at the time of breaking the fast, as it can result in ruining the benefit of the fast and harming your health.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">6)<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Do not go to the cinem<\/strong><\/span>a, so that you do not see that which will spoil your fast and ruin its effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">7)<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>D<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">o<\/span><strong> not go to sleep too late<\/strong><\/span> and as a result miss out on the <em>suhur<\/em> (pre-dawn meal) and the Salat Al-Fajr (Fajr Prayer). Try to maintain an early start to your work, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/the-last-prophet\/biography-of-the-prophet-muhammad-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Messenger of Allah<\/a> (peace be upon him) said: \u201cO Allah bless my Ummah in that which they maintain of an early start.\u201d (Ahmad)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">8)<\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Give more charity<\/span> <\/strong>to your relatives and those who are needy; visit your relatives (to maintain family ties) and clear up any disputes and misunderstandings that may exist.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">9)<\/span><\/strong> Increase in the remembrance of Allah and recite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Quran<\/a>, listen to it and reflect upon its meaning and act according to it. Go to the <em>masjid<\/em> to listen to beneficial talks; and doing the <em>i`tikaf<\/em> in the <em>masjid<\/em> during the last ten days and nights of Ramadan is an act of Sunnah.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">10)<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Read around the subject of fasting<\/strong><\/span> so as to learn its rulings. You will then come to know that eating and drinking forgetfully does not break the fast. Also, having sexual intercourse during the night does not prevent anyone from fasting.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">11)<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Maintain the fast of Ramadan<\/span><\/strong> and prepare your children to fast as soon as you feel they are capable, and beware of breaking the fast without an legally valid reason. Whoever intentionally breaks his fast any day then he is required to make up for that day and repent.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">12) <strong>Beware from eating (and drinking during the day) in Ramada<\/strong><\/span>n, and beware of openly doing so in front of the people, for indeed doing so is tantamount to fearlessness of Allah, making a mockery of Islam, and brazenness in front of the people.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>The Etiquette\u00a0of <\/b><a style=\"font-weight: bold;color: #ff6600\" href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/worship\/spiritual-virtues-benefits-fasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fasting<\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>A)<\/strong><\/span> Protecting the tongue (from evil speech and that which is similar). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: \u201cWhoever does not abandon evil speech and actions, then Allah is not in need of him having left his food and drink.\u201d (Al-Bukhari)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>B)<\/strong><\/span> Taking the <em>sahur<\/em> (pre-dawn meal); The time of breaking the fast, and (the recommended) supplication. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: \u201cWhen any of you break your fast, then do so with dry dates, for indeed it is a blessing. And if you are unable to find dry dates, then water, for verily it is pure.\u201d (At-Tirmidhi)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">C)<\/span> <\/strong>At the time if breaking the fast, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: \u201cThe thirst has gone and the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.\u201d (Abu Dawud)<\/p>\n<p>And the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/the-last-prophet\/biography-of-the-prophet-muhammad-33\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Messenger of Allah<\/a> (peace be upon him) said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people will remain in good so long as they hasten to break the fast (at it&#8217;s appointed time\u201d). (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake the <em>suhur<\/em> (pre-dawn meal), for indeed in the <em>suhur<\/em> there is blessing\u201d.
