It is a communal obligation (<em>Fard kifayah<\/em>) on Muslim men, not women. <em>Adhan<\/em> and <em>Iqamah<\/em> are made before offering the five daily prayers and Friday prayer as well.<\/p>\n<p>There are many Prophetic traditions that describe the excellence and virtues of <em>Adhan<\/em> and those who call to prayer. For example, Mu`awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: &#8220;The <em>muezzinun<\/em> (callers to prayer) will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.&#8221; (Muslim)<\/p>\n<p>There is a consensus among scholars that the <em>Adhan<\/em> is not valid before the due time of prayer except in the case of <em>Fajr<\/em> (Dawn) prayer.
