Adhan in the Islamic Law\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Should I say the du`aa\u2019<\/em> (supplication) while the adhan<\/em> (call to prayer) is being declared or wait until the Muezzin finishes it?<\/p>\n

Answer: <\/strong><\/p>\n

The adhan<\/em> in Islam is but a signal or a public announcement made as a proclamation to all those who hear it that the time to offer the prescribed obligatory prayer of the day or night is now due. It is Important to know that it is highly recommended to make supplications between the adhan<\/em> and the iqamah<\/em>. It is one of the preferred times that supplication could be answered. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The supplication made between the Adhan<\/em> and the Iqamah<\/em> is never rejected.” (Abu Dawud <\/a>and At-Tirmidhi<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) clearly explains that it is preferred to listen to the adhan<\/em> while being declared. Also, one should repeat it after the caller, except for the two hayya `alas-salah<\/em>, hayya `alal-falah<\/em> phrases, after which one should say La hawla wa la quwatah illa billah<\/em> (there is no power or might save Allah). Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whenever you hear the adhan<\/em>, say what the Muezzin is saying.\u201d (Al-Bukhari<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Responding to this question, Dr. Muhammad Salah states that the adhan<\/em> just takes two or three minutes. But there are great virtues in listening to it and repeating after the muezzin. It was narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: \u201cWhoever says when he hears the call to prayer: \u2018Allahumma Rabba hadhihi\u2019l-da\u2019wat il-tammah wa\u2019l-salat il-qaimah, ati Muhammadan il waseelata wa\u2019l-fadeelah, wab\u2019athhu maqaman mahmoodan illadhi wa\u2019adtah<\/em> (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the privilege (of intercession) and also the eminence, and resurrect him to the praised position that You have promised),\u2019 my intercession for him will be permitted on the Day of Resurrection.\u201d (Al-Bukhari)<\/p>\n
