Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: \u201cJibreel taught me one style and I reviewed it until he taught me more, and I kept asking him for more and he gave me more until finally there were seven styles.\u201d (Agreed Upon)<\/p>\n

The most reliable meaning regarding the ahruf<\/em> (styles) is that there are seven methods of reciting the Qur\u2019an, where the wording may differ but the meaning still the same. There are seven mutawatir<\/em> readings and three mashhur<\/em> ones.<\/p>\n

The Mutawatir are:<\/p>\n

Nafi` – Ibn Kathir\u00a0 – Abu `Amr ibn Al-`Ala’\u00a0 – Ibn `Amir \u00a0– `Asim – Hamzah – Al-Kisa\u2019i<\/p>\n

The three Mashhur are:<\/p>\n

Abu Ja`far – Ya`qub – Khalaf<\/p>\n
