{"id":2285,"date":"2025-09-30T04:37:54","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T04:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=2285"},"modified":"2025-09-30T04:37:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T04:37:54","slug":"what-to-do-after-the-shahadatayn-ghusl-wudu-and-tayammum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=2285","title":{"rendered":"What to Do After the Shahadatayn: Ghusl, Wudu, and Tayammum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10188\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.the-faith.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/What-to-Do-After-the-Shahadatayn-Ghusl-Wudu-and-Tayammum-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10188\" class=\"wp-image-10188 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.the-faith.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/What-to-Do-After-the-Shahadatayn-Ghusl-Wudu-and-Tayammum-2-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"What to Do After the Shahadatayn Ghusl, Wudu, and Tayammum\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prayer is not accepted without purification.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After pronouncing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/articles-of-faith\/your-first-steps-in-islam-the-shahadatayn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shahadatayn<\/a>, it is from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/sunnah-act-independent-source-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunnah<\/a> that a person does the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>1.<\/strong> <\/span>It is recommended that a person takes a complete bath (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/eid-alfitr-etiquettes-prayer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ghusl<\/em><\/a>) with pure water and then perform a two-unit prayer. It is narrated that Thumamah al-Hanafi was taken captive and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/prophet-muhammad\/prophet-manners\/how-to-love-the-prophet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prophet<\/a> (peace and blessings be upon him) would keep coming to him and say: \u201cWhat do you say, O Thumamah?\u201d He would reply, \u201cIf you decide to kill me, you would be justified because I have killed; if you let me free, you would be letting free one who shows gratitude; and if you desire wealth, we will give you what you please.\u201d The Companions of the Prophet liked to ransom captives, and so they said, \u201cWhat would we gain if we killed him?\u201d So finally one day, the Prophet decided to set [Thumamah] free, and he thereafter accepted Islam. The Prophet sent him to the walled garden of Abu Talhah, commanding him to take a complete bath (<em>ghusl<\/em>). He performed a complete bath and prayed a two unit prayer, and the said, \u201cYour brother\u2019s\u00a0 Prophet Islam is sincere.\u201d (Sahih Ibn Khuzaimah)<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>How to Perform a Complete Bath (<em>Ghusl<\/em>) <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>The Intention<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One must intend (in his heart) that he is performing <em>ghusl<\/em> to purify himself from a state of major impurity &#8211; whether <em>janabah<\/em>, menstruation or postpartum bleeding &#8211; without uttering such intention verbally.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>1-<\/strong><\/span> Say \u201c<em>Bismillah<\/em>\u201d (\u201cI begin with the name of Allah\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">2-<\/span><\/strong> Wash the hands and then the private parts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>3-<\/strong><\/span> Next, perform wudu (washing specific parts of the body, in a specific sequence, to remove oneself from a state of minor impurity) as you would for the prayer. You may delay washing of the feet until the end of the <em>ghusl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>4-<\/strong><\/span> You should pour [at least] three handfuls of water on your head, running the fingers through the hair so that water reaches the roots of his hair and scalp.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">5-<\/span> <\/strong>Then pour water over the rest of the body, beginning with the right side. You should make sure to wash the armpits, ears, navel, and the creases of the skin if fat, for these creases prevent water from reaching the areas of skin concealed within. You should then wash the feet if not already done while making wudu [before performing the <em>ghusl<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p>Aishah reported: \u201cWhen Allah\u2019s Messenger would perform <em>ghusl<\/em> due to sexual intercourse, he would first wash his hands, then pour water with his right hand into his left, washing his private parts. After that he would perform wudu as he would for the prayer, and then take water and rub it into the roots of his hair with his fingers. [Lastly] he would wash his feet.\u201d (Muslim)<\/p>\n<p><em>Ghusl<\/em> becomes obligatory after one of the following things:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>1-<\/strong><\/span> Ejaculation of semen due to desire, nocturnal emission, or the like.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>2-<\/strong><\/span> Sexual intercourse, even if it does not result in ejaculation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>3-<\/strong> <\/span>Following menstruation,<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>4-<\/strong><\/span> Following postpartum bleeding.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Wudu <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One should perform <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/acts-of-worship\/prayer\/the-second-pillar-of-islam-the-prayer\/\">wudu<\/a> before the prayer for the Prophet said: \u201cPrayer is not accepted without purification\u2026.\u201d (Muslim)<\/p>\n<p>Allah says what means:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>\u201cO you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles&#8230;\u201d<\/strong> (Al-Ma&#8217;idah 5:6)<\/p>\n<p>One should perform wudu in the following manner:<\/p>\n<p>Humran the freed slave of Uthman bin Affan said: \u201cI saw Uthman perform wudu. He poured water on his hands thrice, then he rinsed his mouth and nose, washed his face thrice, washed his right hand up to his elbow thrice, washed his left hand up to his elbow thrice, wiped over his head once, washed his right foot thrice, and then his left foot thrice. He then\u00a0said, \u2018I saw the Messenger of Allah perform wudu like this\u2019, and he said: \u2018Whoever performs wudu like my wudu, and then prays two Rakahs not thinking about anything else, Allah will forgive him all his previous sins.\u2019\u201d (Al-Bukhari)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">1- <\/span><\/strong>One should intend that he is performing wudu to purify himself from a minor state of impurity. The proof that intention is obligatory as seen from the statement of the Prophet \u201cAll deeds are considered by their intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to what he intends\u2026\u201d (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">2-<\/span> One should say, \u201cBismillah,\u201d before making wudu. The said:\u00a0 Prophet \u201cThere is no Prayer for one who does not perform wudu, and there is no wudu for one who does not mention the name of Allah.\u201d (Abu Dawood #101 &amp; ibn Maajah # 399)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">3-<\/span><\/strong> One should wash his hands thrice at the beginning of the wudu.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>4-<\/strong> <\/span>One should rinse his mouth and clean his nose by sniffing water into it thrice. He should blow the water out of his nose using the left hand.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>5-<\/strong> <\/span>One should wash his face thrice. The face consists of the area starting from the hairline at the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin or beard, vertically, and from right ear to the left, horizontally.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>6-<\/strong> <\/span>One should wash his hands from the tips of fingers to the elbow (including the elbow itself) beginning first with the right hand, then the left. If he is wearing a ring or a watch, he must remove it in order to allow the water to reach the skin underneath it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>7-<\/strong><\/span> One must wipe over his head once. This is done by wetting the hands and passing them over the head, beginning from the front, proceeding to the back, and then passing them back over the head to the front.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah b. Zaid narrated: \u201cAllah\u2019s Messenger passed\u00a0 his hands over his head starting from the front, proceeding to the back. He started from his forehead and passed them over to the top of his neck, and then passed them back to the place where he started from.\u201d (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>8-<\/strong> <\/span>One should wipe his ears by inserting wet index fingers in the cavity of the ears, and wipe the back part of the ears with the thumbs. Ibn Abbas described the wudu of the Prophet saying: \u201cHe then wiped over his head and put his index fingers into his ears. He wiped the backside of his ears with his thumbs, and the insides of his ear with his index fingers.\u201d (Abu Dawud)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>9-<\/strong> <\/span>One should wash his feet three times from the tips of the toes up to and including the ankles. Abu Hurairah said that the Messenger of Allah saw a person who did not wash his heels, and he said to him: \u201cWoe to the heels from the Hellfire!\u201d (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>10-<\/strong><\/span> One should wash the parts of wudu in the correct sequence. He should not contradict the sequence mentioned in the verse, for Allah mentioned the obligatory acts of wudu in a specific sequence.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>11-<\/strong><\/span> One should not delay washing one part of the body so that the previously washed part becomes dry. It is mentioned in a Hadith that the Prophet saw a man\u00a0 praying, but a portion of his foot &#8211; the size of a coin &#8211; was not\u00a0 wet. Upon this, the Prophet ordered him to repeat his wudu and prayer.1 (Abu D\u00e2wud)<\/p>\n<p>One must remove anything from the parts that must be washed in the wudu which might prevent water from reaching the skin underneath it, such as nailpolish, and similar things.
