{"id":1556,"date":"2025-09-24T06:37:55","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T06:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=1556"},"modified":"2025-09-24T06:37:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T06:37:55","slug":"book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=1556","title":{"rendered":"That Book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this short talk, Sheikh Nouman Khan reflects on the following verse from Surat Al-Baqarah showing the linguistic miracle in it. The Almighty Allah says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;padding-right: 30px\"><strong>That is the Book about which there is no doubt\u2026<\/strong><a title=\"Recitation of Surat Al-Baqarah\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/al-ajmi-al-ghamidi-and-al-lahuni\/recitation-surat-al-baqarah-3\/\"> (Al-Baqarah 2:2) <\/a><\/p>\n<p>He begins his talk by raising a question which is, how does this verse go? The word \u2018<i>dhalika<\/i>\u2019 is a demonstrative pronoun means \u2018that\u2019. The logic says that \u201cthis book\u201d is closer than \u201cthat book\u201d as the later one means it is far way. What is interesting about the Qur\u2019an is that we find multiple instances of not saying \u2018that Qur\u2019an\u2019, but \u2018this Qur\u2019an\u2019 in Arabic means \u2018<i>hadha<\/i>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The word book in Arabic means \u2018<i>kitab<\/i>\u2019 comes from \u2018<i>kataba<\/i>\u2019 which means to write. The actual meaning of \u2018<i>kitab<\/i>\u2019 is that which is documented, that which etched or written. Now, where is the Qur\u2019an written? Was it already written when it was being revealed? In its complete form, was it already in existence with Who? So the actual \u2018book\u2019 is where? Near or Far? So, it is appropriate to say, \u2018that book\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the word \u2018Qur\u2019an\u2019 comes from <i>qara<\/i>&#8216; which means to read. Where is the reading taking place?
