{"id":12578,"date":"2026-02-03T07:37:36","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T07:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=12578"},"modified":"2026-02-03T07:37:36","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T07:37:36","slug":"hijab-in-judaism-christianity-and-islam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imuslim.us\/?p=12578","title":{"rendered":"Hijab in Judaism, Christianity and Islam"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10067\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.the-faith.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/world-hijab-day-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10067\" class=\"wp-image-10067 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.the-faith.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/world-hijab-day-2-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"World Hijab Day\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Islam commands women to be modest and decent.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As a matter of fact, the desire for woman as a female is one of the desires which man naturally craves for a divine rationale, which is the perpetuation of mankind and their preservation from extinction.<\/p>\n<p>There must be some impulse which man cannot resist so that he will live with woman and beget offspring from her.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/why-should-we-surrender-to-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">God\u00a0<\/a>has rendered the desire for women one of the most burning desires alluring men. In the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/revelation\/quran-and-sunnah\/facts-unique-eloquence-quran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quran<\/a>, God says:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire \u2013 of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.\u00a0<\/strong>(<a title=\"Surat Aal &#096;Imran\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/recitation-of-surat-aal-imran-3\/\">Aal `Imran<\/a>\u00a03:14)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/prophet-muhammad\/prophet-biography\/biography-of-prophet-muhammad-1-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prophet Muhammad<\/a>\u00a0(peace be upon him) said: \u201cI have not left after me any temptation to men which is stronger than women.\u201d (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, such sexual desire is something which is indicative of\u00a0God\u2019s mercy\u00a0towards His servants. Were it not for it, a husband would not have shouldered any responsibility for his wife and would not have endured hardships to provide for her as well as her children. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/prophets-and-messengers\/the-story-of-jesus-as-told-in-the-quran-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quran<\/a>, God says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.\u00a0<\/strong>(<a title=\"Surat Ar-Rum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/al-ajmi-al-ghamidi-and-al-lahuni\/recitation-surat-ar-rum-3\/\">Ar-Rum<\/a>\u00a030:21)<\/p>\n<p>Since the desire for women is something which men cannot resist easily, God has imposed strict regulations in His successive divine messages to make sure that such a desire will play its legitimate role in the human life and will not be got out of the lawful context in which it was essentially placed, given the fact that the satisfaction of such a desire outside its legitimate framework has considerable disadvantages and enormous damage threatening man\u2019s happiness as they ruin his life and lose him the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/articles-of-faith\/your-first-steps-in-islam-belief-in-the-last-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hereafter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of such strict regulations is the imposition of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/wear-hijab-sister-asks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hijab\u00a0<\/a>on women. That is to say, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/islam-wrong-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women<\/a> are commanded to conceal their attractive parts whose charm cannot be resisted by men and only allowed to expose such outer parts of the body which do not cause much temptation and have such humanly reasonable adornment which is quite far away from such finery which involves deliberate display of woman\u2019s beauty and intentional arousal of men\u2019s desires.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense,\u00a0<em>hijab<\/em>\u00a0was made incumbent in all divine messages, including Judaism, Christianity and Islam. No wonder, the female believers in any of the divine messages used to wear\u00a0<em>hijab<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hijab in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/salvation-in-judaism-christianity-and-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judaism<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here is the Old Testament telling us that women used to wear the\u00a0hijab\u00a0(or the veil) and praising those decent women. In the Old Testament, we read the following verses:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cRebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, \u2018Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?\u2019 \u2018He is my master,\u2019 the servant answered.\u00a0So she took her veil and covered herself.\u201d (Genesis 24:64-65)<\/p>\n<p>In the Old Testament, we also read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cTake millstones and grind flour; take off your veil. Lift up your skirts\u201d (Isaiah 47:2), \u201cHow beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes behind your veil are doves.\u201d (Song of Songs 4:1), \u201cNow Susanna was exceeding delicate, and beautiful to behold. But those wicked men commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) that so at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.\u201d (Daniel 13:31-32)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hijab in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/salvation-in-judaism-christianity-and-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christianity<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is the New Testament commanding women to wear\u00a0hijab\u00a0(or the veil) and warning them against unveiling and uncovering themselves. In the New Testament, we read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cBut every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head\u2014it is the same as having her head shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.\u201d (1 Corinthians 11:5-6)<\/p>\n<p>The New Testament also commands women to dress modestly and be characterized by decency and propriety and prohibits them from finery and from uncovering or unveiling themselves. We read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cI also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes.\u201d (1 Timothy 2:9)<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/what-does-islam-give-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hijab in Islam<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Being the final divine message,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/muslim-lifestyle\/islamic-manners\/7-practical-ways-to-acquiring-knowledge-about-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Islam\u00a0<\/a>has not introduced novel teachings. Rather, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/what-is-the-message-of-islam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teachings of Islam<\/a> came as an extension of the previous divine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/prophets-and-messengers\/message-jesus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">messages<\/a>. Therefore, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/the-first-pillar-of-islam-the-testimony-of-faith-the-shahadah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Islam<\/a> also commands women to be modest and decent and avoid finery and unveiling or uncovering themselves. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/islamic-creed\/prophets-and-messengers\/how-do-the-quran-and-the-bible-honor-the-prophets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quran<\/a>, we read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands\u2019 fathers, their sons, their husbands\u2019 sons, their brothers, their brothers\u2019 sons, their sisters\u2019 sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.\u00a0<\/strong>(<a title=\"Surat An-Nur\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/al-ajmi-al-ghamidi-and-al-lahuni\/recitation-surat-an-nur-3\/\">An-Nur<\/a>\u00a024:31)<\/p>\n<p>We also read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet\u2019s] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.\u00a0<\/strong>(<a title=\"Surat Al-Ahzab\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/al-ajmi-al-ghamidi-and-al-lahuni\/recitation-surat-al-ahzab-3\/\">Al-Ahzab<\/a>\u00a033:33)<\/p>\n<p>The Quran accounts for the command to wear\u00a0hijab, indicating that it is intended for protecting women from any potential harm to which they may be vulnerable if men happen to perceive their beauty and finery. We read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.\u00a0<\/strong>(<a title=\"Surat Al-Ahzab\" href=\"http:\/\/www.learning-quran.com\/quran-translations\/en-translation\/al-ajmi-al-ghamidi-and-al-lahuni\/recitation-surat-al-ahzab-3\/\">Al-Ahzab<\/a>\u00a033:59)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-faith.com\/featured-posts\/truth-prophet-muhammad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prophet Muhammad<\/a> confirmed women\u2019s obligation to wear the hijab. He said: \u201cO Asma\u2019, when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this.\u201d He pointed to his face and hands. (Abu Dawud)<\/p>\n<p>The obligation to wear\u00a0hijab\u00a0is more stressed upon offering prayers.
